劇情： 因殺人而入獄的塞勒（尼古拉斯•凱奇 Nicolas Cage 飾）終於熬過幾年鐵窗生涯獲釋了，心上人羅拉（勞拉•鄧恩 Laura Dern 飾）迎接了他的出獄。有情人又得以團聚，但羅拉的母親瑪麗一直都不喜歡塞勒，一直在阻撓女兒和塞勒來往。兩人只好相約私奔，來到了南方。 瑪麗找來了偵探男友約翰尼追蹤他們，企圖將羅拉帶回去。兩人在私奔過程中，都向對方袒露了自己生活中曾經有過的陰暗歲月，那些歲月裡都混雜著血腥、暴力和性，但他們都充分體諒了對方。塞勒此時正為一個毒品販子桑託幹活，桑託怕約翰尼因跟蹤塞勒而發現他們的交易場所，因此將約翰尼幹掉了。另一個毒販鮑比為了除掉塞勒，設了一個圈套正等待著塞勒上鉤。
